It's hard to comprehend that 5 in every 7 young people who are
experiencing mental health difficulties aren't getting professional
help for their issues. There are many factors that young people
identify as preventing them from seeking help. These include:
- not knowing that it was a problem
- feeling like they are the only one experiencing these
problems
- not wanting to be labelled
- fear of hospitalisation or having to take medication for the
rest of their lives
- not knowing who to turn to for help.
Schools play an important role in breaking down these barriers
and supporting and encouraging young people to seek help in the
early stages.
The Reach Out Teachers Network has created teaching modules to reduce stigma
and to improve help seeking
strategies used by young people.
