Professional development opportunities

The Reach Out Teachers Network personnel are available to provide school professional development sessions for individual schools, communities of schools, regions or state conferences.

Please find below a list of professional development options that we are able to deliver:

Conference presentations

The Reach Out Teachers Network Manager, Janice Atkin, has presented keynote addresses at a range of education conferences including the Association of Independent Schools Annual Student Welfare conference 2009; Expanding Learning Horizons Australasian Conference 2009; the NSW PD, Health and PE Teachers Association annual conference. These keynote addresses have included:

  • Promoting positive mental health in the school setting
  • The social impact of technology on Australia's young people
  • Supporting young people to be safe onine
  • Creating online communities to support the promotion of positive mental health

Staff professional development sessions

Promoting resilience and positive mental health and wellbeing in a school community

  • De-mystifying the role of the teacher (it's not about counseling it's about caring)
  • What is resilience and how can we promote it at school?
  • Protective factors -  what are they?
  • Practical strategies for engaging with students in the classroom and playground
  • Starting a conversation
  • Resources to support these conversations


Smaller group training (could be video conferences or face to face)

  • Teaching about mental health in the curriculum (developing curriculum plans, teaching strategies, resources)
  • Connecting a young person in need to appropriate help
  • Supporting students to be safe online
  • Promoting positive relationships in the school

Parent information sessions

  • Social networking 101 - what's all the fuss about?
  • Supporting young people to be safe online
  • Resources available to support a young person going through a tough time.

Promoting mental health in Health and Physial Education

FREE full day workshops in Victoria

Reach Out Teachers Network have partnered with the Zig Inge Foundation to present professional learning workshops for Victorian secondary school teachers to support the promotion of youth mental health and wellbeing in Health and Physical Education.
